According to Section 2(d) of the Designs Act, 2000, a "design" refers to the shape, configuration, pattern, ornamentation, or composition of lines or colors applied to any article. It can be 2D, 3D, or both, created by any industrial process — mechanical, manual, or chemical. A design must be visually appealing and judged solely by the eye. It must not include mechanical or functional aspects of a product.
